An information event will be held on 27 March 2025 for all interested parties.

Modular Clinician Scientist Program (CSP)

A multi-stage Clinician Scientist Program is intended to enable a continuous, modular clinical-scientific career path "from doctorate to specialist training to professorship".

The program enables protected research periods for the implementation of one's own scientific objectives accompanied by the leadership of a working group of the Medical School OWL, binding target agreements and an accompanying qualification program including career mentoring.

A special focus is placed on the compatibility of family, clinical work and research as well as on the promotion of female scientists. Among other things, they can take advantage of the university's mentoring program for female physicians"movement.med" and apply for the Female Clinician Scientist Fellowships (see below).

The open funding line of the Clinician Scientist Program is currently being advertised. All relevant documents can be found here.

The application deadline is 04.05.2025.

If you have any questions or need advice, please contact csp.medizin@uni-bielefeld.de

Funding lines

As part of the Clinician Scientist Qualification Fellowships (CSQF), doctors are given the opportunity to carry out a doctoral project alongside their clinical work. With this call for applications, the Medical School OWL aims to enable doctors to embark on a career as a clinician scientist. In order to support doctors on this career path, a protected research period for a doctoral project can be applied for (maximum funding amount €50,000).

The funding is aimed at doctors interested in research who are pursuing a career as a clinician scientist and a doctorate (Dr. med.).

Applicants can be assistant physicians at the university specialist clinics of the UK OWL or cooperating specialist clinics of the HDZ who fulfil the approval requirements for the doctoral procedure in accordance with the doctoral regulations of the Medical School OWL. We are looking for particularly committed and scientifically qualified doctors with a convincing doctoral project and a proven interest in a clinical-scientific career.

The project outline of the doctoral project must be submitted as an attachment to the application; in addition, the confirmations of the supervisors must be available and stated accordingly. In addition to the application for the fellowship, an application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate must be submitted to the Doctoral Committee.

In order to create equal opportunities and equality, the proportion of women among the funded assistant doctors should be at least 50%, taking into account the criteria-based selection.

Declared family periods, impairments and burdens (chronic illnesses/impairments as well as periods of particular stress and interruptions and reductions in work and research activities, e.g. due to pregnancy, maternity leave, parental leave, care, etc.) and additional tasks will be taken into account in the selection process.

With this call, the Medical School OWL would like to contribute to a better balance between research, clinical work and specialist training or specialisation. To this end, partial periods of leave from clinical duties are funded in order to support protected periods for research activities and further qualification in research and teaching.

The focus of the funding is on supporting doctors with a doctorate who are clinically active researchers at various career stages in the qualification phase in carrying out research activities to build their scientific profile on their scientific and medical career path.

Depending on the funding module (see below), the funding can be used to support the realisation of an own scientific project, preparation of a third-party funding application, mobility and preparation of a post-doctoral habilitation.

Support for the research project and further qualification is provided by an interdisciplinary team consisting of a clinical-scientific (head of the university specialist clinic of the UK OWL or cooperating specialist clinic of the HDZ at which the applicant is employed) and a scientific supervisor (head of the working group at Bielefeld University). The supervisors ensure the feasibility of the research project, provide continuous feedback and support networking between the university specialist clinic or cooperating specialist clinic of the HDZ and the university working group.

The open funding line of the Clinician Scientist Program consists of three funding modules that address different career stages (please refer to the guidelines for a detailed description).

CLINICIAN SCIENTIST ENTRY FELLOWSHIP

  • The Clinician Scientist Entry Fellowship is intended to attract people interested in research to science and to open the door to a scientific and medical career path as a clinician scientist after completing their doctorate. The aim is to support continuous research activity as well as mobility and research networking. The funding is intended to provide opportunities for collaboration in research projects, preparation for third-party funding applications, first own scientific (pilot) projects, scientific publications and further qualification in research and teaching for an academic career.
  • This funding module is aimed at clinically active researching doctors with a doctorate in the 1st-4th year of specialist training. A protected research period for one or collaboration in a research project as well as for the possibility of further academic qualification of 50% (at least 30%) over a maximum of 24 months can be applied for. The maximum funding amount is € 60,000 per person including a material budget of max. € 2,500.

CLINICIAN SCIENTIST

  • The Clinician Scientist funding module is intended to support continuous research activities and, in particular, the development of a scientific profile, e.g. by preparing and carrying out their own scientific project, conducting pilot studies and preparing to acquire third-party funding, preparing for a post-doctoral habilitation and further qualification in research and teaching for an academic career.
  • This funding module is aimed at doctors with a doctorate from the 4th year of specialist training. Funding for protected research time for the independent realisation of a research project and further academic qualification in research and teaching of 50% (at least 30%) over a maximum of 36 months (but at least 12 months) can be applied for. The maximum funding amount is € 60,000 per year per person. A maximum total of € 180,000 per person can be applied for, including a material budget of max. € 5,000.

CLINICIAN SCIENTIST ADVANCED FELLOWSHIP

  • The Clinician Scientist Advanced Fellowship funding module is intended to give medical specialists the opportunity to raise their scientific profile and qualify for a professorship or equivalent leading position in research and healthcare.
  • The fellowship is aimed at clinically active medical specialists with a doctorate. A protected research period for the coordination and realisation of a planned research project and for further academic qualification for a leading position/professorship of 50% (at least 30%) over a maximum of 24 months can be applied for. The total funding amount is a maximum of € 125,000 per person including a material budget of a maximum of € 5,000.

All clinically active researching doctors with a doctorate who are employed at a university specialist clinic of the UK OWL or cooperating specialist clinics of the HDZ at the planned start of funding are eligible to apply.

In order to create equal opportunities and equality, the aim is to ensure that the proportion of women among those funded is at least 50%, taking into account the criteria-based selection.

Specified family periods, impairments and burdens (chronic illnesses/impairments as well as periods of particular stress and interruptions and reductions in work and research activities, e.g. due to pregnancy, maternity leave, parental leave, care, etc.) as well as additional tasks will be taken into account in the selection process.

The Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia supports measures to improve equal opportunities and the compatibility of a career in science and family at universities with the program "Seizing opportunities, promoting research and family - programme for equal opportunities in university medicine in North Rhine-Westphalia(FF-Med)".

With the Female Clinician Scientist Fellowships (pilot phase), the Medical School OWL aims to contribute to improving gender equality and the compatibility of scientific careers, clinical work and care tasks. The aim of the funding is to partially release female clinician scientists from clinical tasks in order to create protected and plannable research time and thus excellent conditions for the (further) development of a clinical-scientific career and for the advancement of a post-doctoral habilitation.

The focus of the funding is to support clinically active women at the UK OWL and cooperating specialist clinics of the HDZ in (re)starting research activities to build a scientific profile on the academic career path.

The funding enables the preparation, implementation or completion of the applicant's own scientific objectives (e.g. projects, applications, publications) under the supervision of an interdisciplinary team (including the head of the applicant's specialist clinic and another head of a working group at Bielefeld University).

All female doctors with a doctorate who would like to (re)intensify their scientific work and who are employed in patient care at a university clinic of the UK OWL or cooperating specialist clinic of the HDZ at the planned start of the funding and have started or already completed their specialist medical trainingare eligible to apply. Applicants can either be at the beginning of their scientific career and qualification phase after their doctorate or pursue the goal of intensifying or resuming their research activities after a reduced phase in order to advance their academic qualification.

Primarily protected research time of 20-50% can be applied for (maximum funding duration of the various funding modules can be found in the guidelines of the respective call for proposals). The allocation of research time can be customised in consultation with the clinic management and the additional scientific support according to the requirements of the planned research project and the individual needs of the applicant.

The aim of the funding line for Digital Clinician Scientists is to partially release doctors with an interest in digital medicine from clinical duties in order to create freedom for research activities and thus promote the pursuit of a scientific medical career in parallel with specialist medical training. The thematic focus is on research into medical practice with digital health applications ("app on prescription"), digital projects ending dates in the area of Covid-19/infection/pandemic and artificial intelligence.

The funding enables the implementation of an own scientific objective accompanied by the head of working group 4 "Digital Medicine" as well as the specialist clinic management embedded in a qualification programme for innovative research and teaching.

The application deadlines for the pilot phase with two funding modules have already passed. Below you will find all information on the finalised call for applications.

Digital Clinician Scientist - Entry Fellowship

The call for applications was aimed at doctors in their 1st to 4th year of specialist medical training who have completed or are about to complete their doctorate and who would like to work in Working Group 4 "Digital Medicine" with the support of a leave of absence for a short period (usually 50% over 2x6 months; but at least 30% with a corresponding extension). This is intended to enable an entry into a scientific and medical career path as a digital clinician scientist by preparing the implementation of their own scientific project ending date. In addition to the leave of absence, material resources of max. 2,500 € can be applied for. The maximum funding amount per person is €50,000 (leave of absence and material resources).

Early-stage Digital Clinician Scientist

Physicians who are in their 1st to 4th year of specialist medical training and have completed their doctorate or are demonstrably close to completing it were eligible to apply. Funding will be granted to a doctor who is supported by Working Group 4 "Digital Medicine" for the realisation of their own research project in digital medicine (usually 50% time off over a maximum of 3 years). In addition to the leave of absence, personnel and material resources of max. €5,000 per person per year can be applied for. The maximum annual funding amount per person is €50,000 (leave of absence, personnel, material and travel expenses).

The prerequisite for funding in both funding modules was a clear scientific objective, a completed or shortly to be completed doctorate, existing or prospective employment at the UK OWL or in a practice in OWL, including participation in specialist medical training (1st to 4th year) and the approval of both the responsible clinic management or the employer in the practice and the head of Working Group 4 "Digital Medicine".
